Student Loan Musts!

College students need to get their student loan applications in early.

It may be harder to find a lender now. Many institutions are getting out of the student loan business. If you wait too long, it may be too late to even get a student loan!

Only go for federal student loans. The interest rates and balances will not break you like some other student loans. These federal loans include Stafford and Perkins.

Know the terms of your student loans. Your interest rate and payments may increase under many common instances. Read your student loan prospectus thoroughly.

Your student loan amounts should coincide with your earning ability after graduating. Do not run up huge student loan debts for a low paying career. Find the cheapest college you can attend. For 99% of college graduates, where you get your diploma from is of little consequence.

Update to this article:

The United States government enacted a new law that now makes all direct student loans available only from the government. The paperwork and applications are handled by your college of choice. When you get your financial aid award, if student loans are part of it, they will be government loans. The advantage to this is you will not have to find a bank and you get a fixed interest rate. You also get perks associated with government student loans. Like payment options and deferments.

The student loans from other sources are basically regular loans given to college students and/or their parents. Because of this, you should only take a private student loan if and only if you really need it.

You don't want to be in more debt when you graduate than you actually need.

You will also need stellar credit or probably a cosigner to get these private student loans. Not everybody will qualify. Remember, everyone qualifies for a direct student loan from the government if they are enrolled in college.

The payment options and deferments will not be as easy as a federal loan.

Take out a private loan at your own risk.

Many colleges have their own internal student loans available, maybe on a short term basis. Look into this option first before considering a private student loan.

Be sure and read all the fine print and rules with a private loan.
